Electron Beam Melting is an additive manufacturing process melting powdered metal by an electron beam under high vacuum atmosphere. When one layer is finished, the powder bed moves down and a new layer of material is added which is again selectively melted. Like this, the form of the model is built up in 3D layer-by-layer. Maximum part sizes vary between 150 x 150 x 180 mm and, depending on material and geometry, 200 x 200 x 200 mm.

As a metal additive manufacturing technique, EBM is quite similar to Selective Laser Melting (SLM). Whereas EBM uses an electron beam in a vacuum, SLM uses laser in a chamber of inert gas.
